WARRI — The oil and gas sector continues to be a crucial catalyst for Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic independence, with local content development being essential for its long-term viability.

The main theme conveyed during the two-day conference and exhibition hosted by Vanguard Media Limited in partnership with the Delta State Government and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) revolved around "Empowering Local Talent, Achieving Worldwide Influence: Strengthening Nigerian Skills in the Oil and Gas Sector for National Progress."

At the event, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, highlighted the importance of utilizing Nigeria’s domestic talent within the oil and gas industry to promote sustainable development, instill national pride, and improve communal relationships.

Representing the Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Hon. He mentioned this dedication resulted in establishing the Department of Local Content and the Delta State Local Content Agency under the Ministry of Oil and Gas with the aim of boosting native involvement.

"We understand the significance of local content, which is why Delta State has put in place frameworks to support indigenous industries, enterprises, and the labor force within the oil and gas industry," said the governor.

He additionally highlighted the importance of Nigeria adopting innovations and advanced technologies to ensure that domestic participants stay competitive within the changing worldwide energy sector.

During his speech, Engr. "Local content focuses on adding value, enhancing capabilities, and making sure that Nigeria's resources benefit its people via skill enhancement and job opportunities," he clarified.

He stressed that effective execution of local content relies on collaborations between native businesses and global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). This fosters an energetic environment for exchanging skills and know-how.

Prince Anthony Okoh, who also spoke as the president of DACCIMA (Delta Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture), emphasized the importance of Nigeria leveraging its oil and gas assets to attain international significance.

"Although significant strides have been achieved, there remains potential for further development. The direction of local content should emphasize quality, creativity, and environmental responsibility," he stated.

He pinpointed crucial sectors needing enhancement, such as closing the skillset disparity, encouraging indigenous creativity, bolstering involvement from resident communities, and enhancing monetary resources for domestic businesses.

Engr. Anthony Okoh from WACCIMA (Warri Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture) spoke on behalf of Okoh, emphasizing the dedication of the Delta business sector to promoting policies aimed at enabling local enterprises to thrive nationally as well as globally.

PANDEF Calls for Complete Enforcement of Local Content Act

He encouraged the NCDMB to set up regional offices in Delta, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, making sure that every oil-rich state has fair access to chances within this field.

"The headquarters in Yenagoa stands as the tallest structure in the Niger Delta region; however,Delta State should also possess an appropriate facility to guarantee effective enforcement of the Local Content Act," he stated.

Okareme stressed that PANDEF will keep involving various parties such as the National Assembly to make sure the initial goals of the Local Content Act are achieved.

An Appeal for CooperationDuring the conference, insights were shared by Uncle Sam Amuka, founder and publisher of Vanguard Media Group, through his representative Adekunle Adekoya, deputy editor.
