Addis Ababa, March 20, 2025 (ENA) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stressed that Ethiopia’s efforts to achieve peaceful access to the sea are receiving considerable global attention.
In response to queries posed by Members of Parliament today, Abiy tackled various topics such as economic changes, political matters, peace and security concerns, along with diplomatic issues, amongst other subjects.
Regarding diplomacy, the Prime Minister stated that Ethiopia wishes to participate in talks and discussions about gaining access to a seaport.
The prime minister highlighted that Ethiopia's efforts to gain peaceful access to the sea are receiving considerable international attention.
He highlighted that Ethiopia's demand for coastal access has been recognized as legitimate by the global community, observing that no other country without a seacoast exceeds Ethiopia in terms of area.
Abiy restated the possibility for fruitful discussions about the Red Sea and the Abay River, promoting a give-and-take attitude toward these common assets.
He stressed that access to the sea is crucial for Ethiopia’s existence, yet reaffirmed that the nation seeks to address this matter through peaceful means.
Ethiopia’s ambition to gain access to the Red Sea won’t lead to conflicts with Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, or Kenya. Rather, considerable opportunities for cooperation and common prosperity exist if all parties reach an agreement, as explained by the prime minister.
He cautioned that if the matter concerning the Red Sea is not addressed through discussions, it will turn into a heavy load for coming generations.
Nevertheless, he reaffirmed that Ethiopia's stance is to seek a peaceful solution via talks and discussions.
