Accra, March 20, GNA - President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged Ghanaians to back the senior national football team, the Black Stars, as they aim for victory in their upcoming World Cup qualifier match against Chad.
During his visit to the Black Stars at their training camp at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday evening, the President stated, "On behalf of all Ghanaians and as the President of the nation, I have come to support and motivate you."
Ghanaians' hearts were shattered by our failure to qualify for the AFCON, yet even during previous qualifications where we made it to the tournament, we exited quite prematurely last time around; hence, we remain hopeful and supportive of your efforts.
The President reaffirmed that Ghanaians continue to have faith in the Black Stars' potential for future success, emphasizing this would depend on the players, coaching staff, and the management committee.
Sacrifice and strength are required," he emphasized. "We all enjoy watching you play for your respective teams, and we hope you will bring that same level of commitment to the national squad.
Participating with the national team doesn’t offer as much financial reward as playing for individual clubs, yet the profound feeling of pride and patriotism knowing your country has qualified for the World Cup makes it an endeavor worthy of immense dedication.
And so, before we begin the qualifiers, let's leave the AFCON disaster in the past and focus on looking ahead.
He emphasized that during the World Cup qualifying matches, the senior national football team aimed to restore its honor.
"If we secure our win and manage to qualify, Ghanaians will surely rally around the team with full support once more. I have faith in your abilities; each of you has remarkable talent," stated President Mahama.
We will keep supporting you, not just during the World Cup, but also after. It’s important to create a solid team, and building such a robust group means finding ways to gather all of you frequently enough to ensure seamless collaboration.
The President emphasized the importance of identifying promising young players to be part of the senior national football squad, enabling them to compete alongside current members and fostering their growth into future athletic icons.
"I'll take some time off to watch the match myself. Despite my heart condition making it challenging for me to follow football matches, I am determined to do so. People have advised me to eat something beforehand and then settle down. My wish is that you all perform well enough for me to feel justified in taking this break to watch," stated President Mahama.
He observed that all of Ghana would support the Black Stars, and he had no doubt they would succeed.
The President was joined by Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, who serves as the Minister for Youth and Recreation.
