The average rainfall in Morocco between September 1, 2024, and March 19, 2025, was recorded at 113.9 mm, according to Government Spokesperson Mustapha Baitas on Thursday.
This number represents an 88.1% rise from last year's total of 60 millimeters but still stands at 18.3% less than the usual yearly average of 139.3 millimeters, as Baitas stated when answering journalists' queries after the cabinet session concluded.
Morocco has seen considerable precipitation since February 22, with rain totals reaching 130% more than the usual average for this time of year in 2024—43.5 millimeters compared to the typical 18 millimeters. This increase in rainfall has aided in lowering water shortages and greatly enhanced storage capacities, as noted.
Between September 1, 2024, and March 20, 2025, the anticipated water inflow totals approximately 2.98 billion cubic meters. Despite constituting a 60.5% shortfall from the typical yearly average, this figure marks a 57.5% increase over last year’s figures, as stated by Baitas.
He pointed out that snowfall across multiple areas has led to higher water storage levels, with approximately 1.71 billion cubic meters of water entering reservoirs starting from February 1st.
Due to these influxes, the reservoir levels behind the dams have significantly increased, climbing from 27% to 36%, reaching a total volume of 6.12 billion cubic meters as of March 20, 2025, he noted.
The minister highlighted that these rainfalls have instilled new hope in farmers as they positively affect multiple areas of agriculture, notably fruit orchards. It is anticipated that the precipitation will decrease water requirements for irrigation, cut down energy expenditures for farmers, and lessen the cost of fodder for herders.
