Nigeria Takes Third Place in the $3 Billion Global Gaming Industry

The CEO of Gamr, Eniola Edun, has mentioned that Nigeria holds the third-largest market share in the international gaming sector, which is valued at more than $3 billion.

As she explains, Nigeria has managed to secure more than $180 million in the gaming sector over the past three years via collaborations and community development initiatives.

She made this comment at the side lines during the formal launch of Nigeria’s inaugural comprehensive gaming talent center in Lagos on Thursday.

She emphasized that fostering the development and long-term viability of the sector in Nigeria necessitates backing from the federal government, including financial assistance, educational resources, and improved infrastructure. She further stressed that understanding this field is vital for the country’s economic health.

Individuals should strive to educate themselves and expand their knowledge regarding the sector. This way, they can grasp the investments required within the industry.

Today marks the launch of Gamr Lab in partnership with the French embassy and the University of Lagos. We owe their significant and invaluable support for making this happen.

Gamr Lab represents an ambitious move to establish Africa as a leading force in the global video gaming sector. Our objective is straightforward: to foster top-tier game development and create a resilient environment that elevates African content creators to the pinnacle of the industry.

"Africa boasts an abundance of narratives and talent. Given adequate backing, our developers have the potential to craft games that mesmerize audiences worldwide. The Gamr Lab aims to close the divide by offering essential resources, education, and platforms necessary for success on the international scene. This initiative transcends mere projects; it embodies a movement. To all African creators, this moment belongs to you. Together, let’s develop games that resonate with Africa’s creativity," she stated firmly.

Additionally, Christophe Pecot, the Regional Audiovisual Attaché, stated that the launch of the hub would contribute to fostering the growth of the local esports and video game industry.

"This laboratory undoubtedly will aid in nurturing this ecosystem and provide valuable training for young students. Given the large number of youth residing in Nigeria, it is crucial to invest in this area," he stated.

The Acting Director of the Innovation and Technology Management Office at the University of Lagos, Associate Professor Olayinka Adewunmi from the Mechanical Engineering department, stated that this hub will facilitate cooperation among creatives, individuals in humanities, and those in social sciences.

She praised the initiators of the project, mentioning that the University anticipates potential collaborations with the hub across various areas within the institution.
