Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, who serves as the Director General of the National Youth Service Corp, has confirmed to the participants that they can expect their updated monthly stipend of ₦77,000 beginning from March 2025.
During an interactive session with corps members at the Wuse and Garki NYSC Zonal Offices in Abuja, the DG provided this reassurance. They also reiterated the dedication of both the NYSC and the Federal Government to enhancing the well-being of corps members.
This development follows several months since the NYSC unveiled plans to raise the stipend from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, aligning with the revised minimum wage set at ₦70,000 by President Bola Tinubu back in July 2024. This adjustment came after an earlier hike in 2019 when the minimum wage was increased to ₦33,000, subsequent to raising it to ₦30,000 through a prior evaluation.
As stated in the document co-signed by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the NYSC mentioned that the authorization for N77,000 was included within a correspondence issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission on September 25, 2024. The letter bore the signature of its chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta, aligning with the provisions set forth in the National Minimum Wage (Amended) Act of 2024.
Brigadier-General Nafiu stressed that the welfare of the corps members was still a primary concern and encouraged them to stay composed, committed, concentrated, and orderly during their national service.
"Starting in March, you will receive an amount of seventy-seven thousand naira as your monthly stipend. The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) excels at maintaining accurate records, so I can confirm that your payment will be made. Both the country and the scheme value your contribution," he said.
He similarly praised the foresight of the NYSC's original architects, characterizing the program as a vital organization that promotes national cohesion by immersing graduates in various cultural landscapes throughout Nigeria. He reassured the participants that the NYSC administration will persistently impart qualities like nationalism, self-control, guidance, and collaboration into every incoming group.
Corps Member Zaka Deborah Alheri, with identification number FC/24A/5831, representing her peers from the Garki Zone, conveyed appreciation to the Director General for his dedication to guaranteeing the prompt disbursement of their enhanced stipend.
