President Trump stated on Sunday that his promise to resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia within 24 hours was "a bit sarcastic."
During a Sunday airing of "Full Measure," Trump faced questions about his campaign pledge to bring an end to the conflict in under 24 hours.
Well, I was somewhat sarcastically making that comment," Trump replied. "What I actually meant to say is that I would prefer to resolve it, and I believe I will be successful.
During the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump frequently said he would “solve” the war in 24 hours if the American people elected him to a second term.
"If it remains unresolved, I will get it resolved within 24 hours, involving both Zelensky and Putin," Trump stated. told Fox News host Sean Hannity, almost two years ago, mentioned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
And there’s a simple negotiation to be had. However, I won’t reveal what it entails since doing so would render it ineffective; it only works as a surprise. Yet, this negotiation is indeed quite straightforward. Within twenty-four hours, I guarantee a resolution leading to peace between them. It has been over a year and a half already, which feels like an eternity. This delay is unacceptable," Trump stated back then. "Crucially, the conflict must end immediately because Ukraine is facing devastation.
Since taking office almost two months ago, Trump has focused on trying to broker a resolution to halt the conflict; however, the fighting persists.
During the Sunday interview, Trump was questioned about whether he had been communicating with Putin, specifically if these conversations occurred "in recent days or hours" and if they were personal exchanges.
"Well, I'd rather not mention this, but we are working with him, and I believe things are progressing quite satisfactorily," Trump replied.
"It's an extremely complicated scenario, you understand. It's a horrific war. However, I believe things are progressing positively," he remarked.
Trump noted that Ukrainians have agreed to a ceasefire framework and said he was optimistic about Russia agreeing as well.
"We've reached a ceasefire agreement with the Ukrainian faction, and we're attempting to secure one with Russia as well. So far, things have been going reasonably well. We'll gain further insight on Monday, and ideally, it will be positive," Trump stated.
On what Trump’s plan is if Putin does not agree to a ceasefire, Trump said, “Bad news for this world because so many people are dying.”
"But I believe, I genuinely think he will consent. Yes, I'm quite certain about this because I understand him rather well, and I feel strongly that he'll concur," Trump stated additionally.
