VP Alupo Heads to Namibia for President-Elect Nandi-Ndaitwah’s Inauguration

______________________ Uganda's Deputy President Jessica Alupo landed in Namibia’s capital city, Windhoek, on Thursday afternoon for the nation's 35th independence celebration and the swearing-in of the new president on Friday. Alupo is standing for President Yoweri Museveni.

She will join other world leaders at the joint ceremony which will be held at the Independence National Stadium.

Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is 72 years old, will be sworn in as Namibia’s fifth president and its first female leader.

When Alupo arrived at Hosea Kutako International Airport, they were greeted by Namibia's Deputy Minister for Gender, Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare, Bernadette Maria Jagger, along with Uganda's High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Paul Amoru.

Among those present were Uganda's Honorary Consul to Namibia, Prince Joseph Ndaula, as well as Uganda's Military Attaché to South Africa, Colonel David Richard Lumuba.

Additionally, representatives from Uganda's High Commission in South Africa and the Namibian Consulate in Windhoek were present.;

Nandi-Ndaitwah serves as Namibia's current vice-president and also leads the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), which is both a political party and a former liberation movement in the nation.

In December 2024, she secured the presidency with 57.31% of the votes, defeating 14 opponents.

Her win prolonged SWAPO's governance in Namibia, which has been in place since the country gained independence from Germany in 1990.

Nandi-Ndaitwah is poised to take over from Dr Nangolo Mbumba, who has been serving as the interim president for a year following the passing of the third President, Hage Geingob, in February of the previous year.
