Witkoff Dismisses Reports of Israel Talks, Asserts Lebanon Acts Independently

U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff has dismissed a media report claiming he had talks with an unidentified Lebanese official in Doha, describing it as "unfounded, untrue, and deceptive."

Witkoff’s office stated that spreading rumors and false information merely creates chaos and diminishes the trustworthiness of media organizations,

“Lebanon is an independent nation that will make its own sovereign decisions; we trust this government’s ability to do so,” the statement added.

"The Trump administration has explicitly conveyed both publicly and privately their support for the Lebanese government, led by President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. They back these leaders as they strive to assert governmental control over all regions of Lebanon and enforce changes aimed at bolstering public institutions and fulfilling the citizens' aspirations," according to the statement.

The report released on Wednesday in An-Nahar newspaper cited Witkoff as stating that his administration is disappointed with "how Lebanese officials handle their dealings with Hezbollah."

Lebanon will be urged to engage directly and face-to-face in political talks with Israel, assigning a civil servant to lead this effort," purportedly stated the supposed Lebanese individual quoting Witkoff in the reported account. "Meanwhile, Israel would be represented by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, who closely aligns with Benjamin Netanyahu’s way of thinking.
