ABUJA – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has conveyed profound condolences to those affected by the deadly car crash that took place on Tuesday evening at Karu Bridge in Abuja.
Wike, characterizing the incident as preventable, expressed his willingness to bear the medical costs for those hurt. Additionally, he conveyed his sympathies to the relatives of the deceased and urged for ongoing care for the victims who survived.
Through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike mentioned that after hearing about the incident, he promptly instructed the Mandate Secretary for Health and Environment, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, to ensure the victims received proper medical attention.
"At my instruction, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe was stationed at Asokoro District Hospital up till this morning, collaborating with the healthcare staff to treat the 17 patients who were admitted," stated Wike.
He also disclosed that following the preliminary stabilization phase: Seven individuals were transferred to the National Hospital for specialized treatment; Six people with slight injuries recovered after receiving appropriate care; and Three persons suffering from extensive burns and crushing wounds continue to be in serious condition.
A patient suffering from third-degree burns unfortunately died during their medical care.
The Minister implored all those who use roads, especially operators of large vehicles, to exercise caution and follow speed regulations to avoid additional catastrophes.
He urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other regulatory bodies to implement more rigorous adherence to traffic regulations to guarantee safer roads.
This incident at the same Karu Bridge echoes previous safety issues, intensifying worries over careless driving and subpar vehicle upkeep.
