Founder of Military Barracks Mammy Market Passes Away at 86

Mrs. Maria Ochefu, who established Mammy Market stores throughout Nigerian military camps, has died at the age of 86.

Her son, Professor Yakubu Ochefu, verified her passing in a telephone call to our representative on Thursday.

He disclosed that his mother gently drifted into eternal slumber and passed away on Tuesday.

Mrs. Ochefu was wedded to Colonel Anthony Ochefu, who held the position of military governor in Enugu State.

In an interview with The PUNCH A few years back, she recounted the tale of how she launched Mammy Market, which eventually grew into an essential presence in military camps across the country.

In the course of the interview, she stated that two previous leaders, General Yakubu Gowon and Major General Muhammadu Buhari, counted themselves as her clients.

Prof. Ochefu confirmed her passing, saying, "Indeed, Mama passed away on Tuesday in Makurdi while she was sleeping. She had been receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi and would have turned 87 this April."
