Jets Expected to Draft Top QB for a Showdown with Justin Fields

One of the most significant maneuvers during this off-season for the New York Jets was securing free-agent quarterback Justin Fields with a contract. two-year, $40 million agreement featuring $30 million in guaranteed money.

In last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Fields played in 10 games, starting six of them, where he completed 106 out of 161 pass attempts for 1,106 passing yards, threw for five touchdowns, and had one interception. Additionally, he contributed significantly as a rusher with 289 yards and scored five touchdowns on the ground.

Certainly, everyone assumes he'll continue as the Jets' starting quarterback. However, according to Chad Reuter’s mock draft for NFL.com, New York might choose Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart with their seventh overall selection.

“I don’t question the Jets’ faith in Justin Fields, but I also believe this doesn’t automatically rule out their decision to draft a quarterback,” Reuter stated. “The competition between Fields and Dart could assist the team in determining whether.” either A player could be Gang Green's permanent solution.

Coming off an outstanding season with the Rebels, Dart played in 13 games and managed to complete 276 out of 398 pass attempts for a total of 4,279 yards. He threw 29 touchdown passes against only six interceptions, achieving a remarkable passing efficiency rating of 180.7, which led all of FBS.

If the Jets were to select him with the seventh overall pick, it would come as a shock, given that Pro Football Focus has him listed as the sixth-best quarterback and the 129th best prospect in total for the 2025 NFL Draft.

Should this situation turn into reality and Dart ends up not securing the starting position, he might have to wait in reserve until Fields’ agreement with the Jets concludes following the 2026 season.
