The 100 Black Men of Jackson Inc., which has been active for 35 years, is an established organization.
The initiative provides guidance to boys between the ages of 8 and 18.
Subscribe to our NewslettersThe aim of their initiative is to introduce young individuals to admirable older males, with the intention of altering their perspectives and embedding strong principles within them, paving the way toward achievement.
John Hardy, who serves as the executive director, stated that the organization receives periodic funding from the Mississippi Department of Human Services along with contributions from local residents.
"Usually, this leaves little space for major enhancements and similar investments. We aim to use those funds to support our mentees instead," explained Hardy.
But then arrived a man called Deangelo Sherrod.
"He’s a tennis player. When he found out we have tennis courts, he expressed interest in seeing them. As I gave him a tour of the place, he commented, ‘This area definitely requires some improvement,’ noting fallen branches, a dirty basketball court needing pressure washing, among other issues. He then mentioned, ‘I’d be glad to donate my time; perhaps I could also bring some buddies along to assist,’” stated Hardy.
Sherrod started off at full speed.
We don't have many resources available for ourselves, but I was pleased to lend a hand,” Sherrod explained. “Especially because they guide younger children. If coming over to tidy up the space or making sure it’s suitable for the kids turned out well, then I felt content doing it.
Sherrod plans to continue the renovation until completed.
