LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Head Start Association stated that their regional office was suddenly shut down on Thursday.
Aside from closing down, all federal employees were unexpectedly put on administrative leave until June.
The Michigan Head Start Association stated that the closure resulted from actions taken by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) along with reductions made by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The Region 5 office is responsible for overseeing Head Start programs in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
Besides managing the programs, the regional office has duties including monitoring grants, allocating funds, and offering training and technical support.
According to the Michigan Head Start Association, lacking assistance from the regional office could lead to issues for programs when they try to approve their grants. Additionally, these programs may face greater challenges in submitting applications aimed at making their services better suited to meet the needs of their respective local areas.
The Head Start initiative offers support to 29,000 disadvantaged children and their families in Michigan.
