Minot Sewing Enthusiast Quilts for Orphans Abroad

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) - Occasionally, our interests emerge from experiences with things we never anticipated enjoying.

Leoné Nera came from a family passionate about knitting and crocheting, yet she mentioned having no knowledge of quilting.

"I had no idea at all back then what a quilt was," stated Nera.

Nera mentioned that she took up sewing prior to having her first child.

Grateful for a pal who took her to a quilt exhibition, she acquired a sewing machine and decided to give quilting a try.

She mentioned that working at Minot’s Sewing and Vacuum afterward further assisted her in mastering the craft.

"Being there allowed me to gain significant experience. I became part of the guild, and since then, there has been no turning back," stated Nera.

Her increasing enthusiasm for quilting culminated in an endeavor bigger than any stitching undertaking.

"I'm not sure if I dreamed about Born2Be one night," stated Nera.

Born2Be is the phrase that Nera stitches onto the quilts she dispatches to her friend's orphanage in India.

She mentioned that every quilt carries an emotion, and she hopes the child will sense the authenticity beneath it.

"When I say this child is meant to be loved, they will indeed receive love," stated Nera.

She mentioned that so far, she has dispatched numerous quilts to orphanages in India.

Nera’s quilt-making adventure has resulted in her being honored as the featured quilter for the Minot Prairie Quilt Festival.

Jana Frederick, who serves as the festival chair, mentioned that every year, they select a member from the Minot Prairie Quilt Guild to highlight.

"We select someone who has made significant contributions to the quilting community," stated Fredrick.

The quilt festival occurs on Friday and Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM.

The entry fee is $5 at the entrance.

Participants can enjoy a lineup of presentations, visit exhibitors, and naturally, admire quilts.
