No Crabbing Allowed: Dungeness Season Draws to a Close in Monterey Bay

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife stated that they will be closing both the commercial and recreational Dungeness crab fisheries utilizing vertical fishing lines below Pigeon Point.

The shutdown will begin on April 15 to avoid additional whale entanglements.

Nevertheless, vertical lines will be permitted in Zones 1-3, which include San Francisco and a significant portion of the Bay Area located above the Central Coast.

Geoff Shester, who leads Oceana's California campaign, was hesitant about leaving those regions accessible.

"California's strategy to decrease whale entanglements is ineffective. Allowing the current crab fishing season in both the Bay Area and Northern California poses significant danger to endangered whales," stated Shester.

Whale entanglements confirmed along the West Coast hit a six-year peak in 2024.
