LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — The University of Nebraska Board of Regents plans to discuss renaming the arena within the Bob Devaney Sports Center in honor of long-serving volleyball coach John Cook.
As per the schedule for the April 11 gathering, UNL’s Athletic Director Troy Dannen along with their Deputy Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Chief Financial Officer Seth Dorsey plan to present the proposed name alteration to the committee.
The proposal encompasses a bronze statue located exterior to the arena, improved directional signs, along with modifications for internal nomenclature changes. The projected expense for this initiative stands at $400,000.
Cook revealed his retirement earlier this year following 25 years as the head volleyball coach at Nebraska.
He amassed a remarkable 883-176 overall coaching record, with 722-103 of those wins coming during his tenure at Nebraska. Under his guidance, the Huskers secured four national championships, reached the NCAA semifinals twelve times, claimed fourteen conference titles, and maintained the longest consecutive sellout streak in NCAA women’s sports history.
He has received the title of conference coach of the year eight times and has been honored as the AVCA national coach of the year three times.
During Cook’s tenure, the Nebraska volleyball program emerged as a dominant force nationally, breaking attendance records, nurturing five Olympic athletes, and regularly topping the charts in terms of spectator backing. In 2023, his squad drew an unprecedented audience of 92,003 spectators to Memorial Stadium for "Volleyball Day in Nebraska," marking the highest turnout for any women’s sports event ever recorded.
The Board of Regents has planned their meeting for 9 a.m. on Friday, April 11.
