NU Regents Mull Naming Arena After John Cook at Bob Devaney Sports Center

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN)—The University of Nebraska Board of Regents plans to discuss renaming the arena within the Bob Devaney Sports Center in honor of long-serving volleyball coach John Cook.

As per the schedule for the gathering on April 11, UNL’s Athletics Director Troy Dannen along with the Deputy Athletics Director for Internal Operations and Chief Financial Officer Seth Dorsey plan to suggest the renaming to the committee.

The proposal encompasses a bronze statue located exterior to the arena, enhanced directional signs, along with modifications for internal nomenclature changes. The projected expense for this initiative totals $400,000.

Cook revealed his retirement earlier this year following 25 years as the head volleyball coach at Nebraska.

He amassed a career record of 883-176, with 722-103 coming during his tenure at Nebraska, and guided the Huskers to four national championships, 12 NCAA semifinal berths, 14 conference titles, and the longest consecutive sellout streak in NCAA women’s sports history.

He has received the title of conference coach of the year eight times and has been honored as the AVCA national coach of the year three times.

During Cook's tenure, the Nebraska volleyball program transformed into a national force, breaking attendance records, nurturing five Olympic athletes, and regularly topping the nation in spectator backing. In 2023, his squad attracted an audience of 92,003 to Memorial Stadium for "Volleyball Day in Nebraska," marking the highest turnout for any women’s sports event ever.

The Board of Regents conference is set for 9 a.m. on Friday, April 11.
