Oyo Joins Forces With EIDU to Boost Tech Education in Nigeria's Public Primary Schools

IBADAN — In an effort to transform fundamental education in public schools through strategic initiatives, the Oyo State Government has joined forces with EIDU GmbH, a German edtech firm, to launch a digital learning pilot project.

The initiative, which began in First Term of the 2024/2025 academic year, has already made a significant impact in four public primary schools selected for the pilot program in the state.

The trial initiative provides students and educators at chosen institutions with digital equipment aimed at boosting basic reading skills, mathematical proficiency, and technological know-how. Educators further gain access to specialized instruction and materials, enabling them to offer more effective teaching and better educational results in their classrooms.

This partnership seeks to enhance educational achievements for younger pupils through the use of technology to assist educators and captivate students.

This program aims at incorporating EIDU’s digital education system into public elementary schools throughout Oyo State. This platform offers interactive academic materials, instant evaluation instruments, along with teaching assistance resources—all tailored to enhance basic reading and math abilities.

During his speech, Governor Seyi Makinde, who was represented by Reverend Idowu Ogedengbe, his Executive Assistant on Administration and the focal person for the state’s Human Capital Development, showed great excitement regarding the collaboration. He also voiced hope that this initiative would extend to additional regions, aligning with Governor Seyi Makinde's educational goals.

Ogedengbe highlighted the government's dedication to enhancing education and achieving better learning outcomes via innovative methods. The aim is to make these educational improvements available to everyone by forming strategic alliances with important local and international stakeholders and development partners, aligning with the United Nations' sustainable development goals for education.

EIDU is an educational tech firm aimed at enhancing learning achievements for kids in under-resourced areas across Africa through accessible digital education tools. This platform assists educators, monitors academic development, and creates interactive learning spaces.

As a key participant, the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) managed the trial initiative within the state, ensuring it aligned with both Nigeria’s overarching educational objectives and the United Nations’ sustainable development targets.

Ogedengbe disclosed that due to the program’s initial achievements, both the Oyo State Government and EIDU are intensifying their partnership with the aim of broadening the initiative to encompass additional schools throughout various regions of the state.

Led by Tomas Kessl, the Director of Partnerships at EIDU GmbH in Berlin, Germany, a group of technical collaborators is presently in Oyo State. They aim to interact with government and educational authorities to lay the foundation for expanding the initiative.

The expansion aims to deliver considerable advantages such as enhancing educational achievements by reinforcing basic reading and math skills via consistent evaluations.

The project also emphasizes several additional advantages such as enhancing digital skills, strengthening teachers' capabilities, and fostering community involvement. This includes active participation from both host communities and members of the Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) throughout the project’s execution.

Ogedengbe reiterated Makinde’s dedication to closing the digital gap and guaranteeing that each child receives a high-quality education. He also praised EIDU and all contributors involved in making the trial initiative successful, recognizing their part in forging a better tomorrow for the kids of Oyo State.

"We acknowledge the significant impact that technology has on defining the future of education. Partnering with EIDU supports Governor Seyi Makinde’s objective to offer high-quality education across various educational levels, focusing especially on primary and early childhood stages. Additionally, this partnership aims to equip our educators with essential resources required for delivering impactful instruction," stated Ogedengbe.

In his earlier comments, Tomas Kessl emphasized the significance of providing educators with digital tools customized for their specific environment. He also affirmed that the collaboration with the Oyo State Government on this initiative aligns with the company’s aim to advance technology-driven education at the foundational level.

During the question-and-answer session with reporters, Kessl asserted that EIDU is committed to maintaining the initiative within the state over an extended period according to the State Government’s objectives. He also confirmed EIDU’s preparedness to increase the scope of the project and extend it to additional educational institutions across various geopolitical regions, working alongside the State Government as well as leveraging assistance from their collaborators.

He mentioned that educators at the chosen institutions participating in this initiative will receive targeted instruction to smoothly incorporate these technologies into their teaching environments, guaranteeing successful execution and lasting effects.

Mr. Kabir Issah was also in attendance, along with the Principal Private Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Mr. Tunde Aiki, and the Director of Administration and Supply in the Governor’s Office.

Other members accompanying Tomas Kessl included Henry Were, who served as the Head of Operations for Kenya, Ignatius Attah, specializing in government relations at EIDU GmbH in Nigeria, and Mary Adubifa, an EIDU officer based in Oyo State.
