The superintendent of Dayton Public Schools, Dr. David Lawrence, issued a statement following the shooting, reproduced below:

The Dayton Public School System is profoundly affected by the heartbreaking loss of an eleventh-grader from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. Alfred Hale was a cherished part of both the Dunbar family and the larger Dayton Public Schools community. His absence will be deeply felt by fellow students, faculty members, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

We offer our deepest sympathies to the student's family and friends during this extremely challenging period. A crisis response team was present at the school on Friday and will continue to be accessible to assist any students requiring help in the coming days and weeks.

Students who require assistance beyond school hours are advised to reach out to the Montgomery County 24/7 Crisis Support Line at 833-580-2255.

I plan to meet with the student’s family on Saturday. This scenario genuinely saddens Dayton Public Schools and the whole Dayton area. We remain committed to collaborating closely with the City of Dayton and our community allies to tackle and stop the unwarranted violence affecting our young people.

We'll keep tracking this narrative.
