Two Years Later: Church in Martinsville Reinstates Steeple Post-Tornado

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. — As storm cleanup efforts are underway across the state, several areas haven’t fully recovered from previous storms.

In March of 2023, An EF-3 tornado struck Morgan County. The tornado devastated an ancient church, causing a spire over a century old to collapse.

"It caused significant damage in the Martinsville area, but we weren't aware that the church had been affected until, naturally, we received word from others," stated Tim Jennings from the church.

After the storm subsided, the spire of the First Presbyterian Church, erected in the 1800s, was missing.

"We witnessed the steeple not just collapse, but also create a breach in our sanctuary and crash into the courtyard, effectively being destroyed at that moment," stated Reverend John Erickson.

The refuge stood vacant for roughly one and a half years, during which time it became cluttered with dust and rubble strewn among the pews and featured a large opening in the roof.

"We were about to be welcomed as new members of the church when the tornado struck," said Jennings.

Having worked as a former construction worker, Jennings has taken on the role of liaison, aiding in the restoration of the church to reclaim its past splendor.

"When God allows difficult events to occur to righteous churches, He also brings positive outcomes for them," stated Erickson.

We're incredibly thankful for the new steeple.

Crowds assembled at the intersection of East Washington and South Sycamore streets to observe as the copper pinnacle was lifted and subsequently set atop the structure.

We were also shown a tour of how the sanctuary appears at present.

"From carpets to paint, everything has been renovated. Naturally, we also cleaned the pews," Erickson stated.

Within, the light filters through the stained glass windows, giving the house of worship an almost brand-new appearance.
