Where Are They Now? The Six Bayern Munich First-Teamers Released in 2015

Bayern Munich Were overseen by Pep Guardiola when they released six players during the summer of 2015 – however, whatever happened to the players let go by the mighty German club?

Guardiola brought in players like Douglas Costa and Arturo Vidal with the aim of securing the Champions League title, yet Bayern was knocked out by Atletico Madrid in the semifinals even though they won the Bundesliga once more.

In 2015, Bayern released six players, and mostly these decisions proved correct. However, what has become of them since then?

Mitchell Weiser

Weiser, acquired from Koln, made his debut under Jurgen Klopp and went on to feature an additional 20 times with Pep Guardiola at the helm.

In the end, Weiser was a prospect who excelled more in the youth teams and the B team than with Bayern's senior squad.

Weiser has consistently played as a professional in the Bundesliga over the last eight years since leaving Bayern in 2015.

He has played for Hertha Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen, and he is now representing Werder Bremen after helping them secure promotion in the 2021-22 season.

Pepe Reina

Incredibly, Reina continues to play football even in 2025. It’s hard to recall a moment when he wasn’t involved with the sport. He seems like someone who might have been recruited by Liverpool under Gerard Houllier’s management.

The goalkeeper is currently with Como after having played for Napoli, AC Milan, Aston Villa, Lazio, and Villarreal following his departure from Bayern.

In August, he will be 43 years old. Quite remarkable for his age.

Claudio Pizarro

Pizarro had two prosperous periods with Bayern Munich, netting 125 goals across 327 matches before departing in 2015 to embark on his fourth tenure at Werder Bremen.

The forward from Peru played for Cologne for one year prior to this. fifth spelled with Bremen, ultimately retiring in 2020.

He currently serves as a club ambassador for Bayern.

Rico Strieder

Following his first appearance against Bayer Leverkusen in May 2015, Strieder was transferred to Utrecht shortly thereafter since Guardiola evidently did not foresee a long-term role for him at Bayern.

Most of the midfielder's professional journey took place in the Netherlands, where he represented three different teams. Later, he decided to return to Germany and joined SV Heimstetten, which competes in the lower divisions of Bavarian football.

Information regarding his present location is limited, however, it seems Strieder is currently unaffiliated with any team instead of having retired from football as of this writing.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Excitedly signing in 2015, Schweinsteiger struggled during his time at Manchester United, and ever since then, the legendary player from Bayern has expressed criticism about how he was handled in England.

"I felt extremely disappointed because United became the second team I truly cared about," Schweinsteiger said to The Overlap while talking about his second year with the club.

When I arrived at Carrington, which is United's training facility, for my birthday, football director John Murtough greeted me and informed me that I wasn't permitted to enter the locker room—it was the coach's instruction.

I needed him to fetch my cleats and training equipment for me. When I inquired about whom I would be training with, he mentioned the under-16 team. So, I ended up going and training with them.

Even though he played just 18 times in the league over two years at Old Trafford, the World Cup champion was earning an impressive £240,000 per week.

Two years after leaving, he concluded his professional journey withMLSand retired in 2019. These days, he occasionally works as a commentator.

Dante

Centered around Dante in defense, Bayern shattered records for conceding the fewest goals and achieving the most clean sheets during their historic treble-winning season in 2012-13.

The player from Brazil began the Champions League final win against Borussia Dortmund and remained with the team for an additional two years prior to moving to Wolfsburg.

At 41 years old, this center-back serves as the captain of the Ligue 1 team Nice and has played an impressive 285 matches for them since joining in 2016. Quite remarkable indeed.
