Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán Honors Italy’s Deputy PM with Prestigious Medal

Hungary’s right-wing prime minister, Viktor Orbán, presented Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini, with an honorary award for his efforts in upholding traditional Christian values and combating immigration, as described by Orbán.

On Wednesday, during the Hunyadi János Award ceremony in Brussels, Orbán bestowed upon Salvini both a bronze statuette and an official certificate.

In 2023, the Hungarian Foundation for a Civic Hungary initiated an international award. This accolade was first bestowed upon former Member of the European Parliament Professor Ryszard Legutko.

Orbán said the prize was awarded for Salvini's "unwavering defence of Europe," as he "fought courageously against the invasion of illegal migrants by sea."

During his address at the event, the Hungarian prime minister utilized the opportunity to commend the migration policies of the U.S. administrations.

The Union should not function as a financial system aimed at undermining national governments. We will require similar cleansing efforts here in Brussels, just like what our American counterparts are undertaking in Washington.

Matteo Salvini leads Italy’s far-right, anti-immigration League Party. In his acceptance speech, he criticized the European Commission. €800 billion defence plan and urged the EU to implement specific measures to guarantee peace.

"In these offices in Brussels, there are individuals discussing the war, planning for it, and talking about military forces. I do not believe that the future of Europe should be World War III. There are people here who seek peace instead. They desire peace, work, tranquility, and well-being," Salvini stated.

Salvini was formerly charged with migrant abduction due to his decision not to permit a refugee rescue vessel to berth in Italy in 2019. However, he was cleared by an Italian court last year.
