Addis Ababa, 19 March 2025 (ENA)—Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), expressed his approval for the conclusions drawn from the tripartite gathering organized by Qatar on March 18, 2025, in Doha. This meeting brought together the heads of state from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with support from His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar.
The tripartite meeting convened President Paul Kagame from Rwanda alongside President Félix Tshisekedi from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Chairperson applauds the leaders from the DRC and Rwanda for their dedication to discussions and finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in eastern parts of the DRC.
Their partnership embodies genuine leadership and a mutual understanding that peace, security, and stability are essential prerequisites for the economic growth of their countries and the broader Great Lakes area.
The Chairperson recognized that both leaders reiterated their pledge to an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities, as was decided at the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) meeting held in Dar es Salaam on February 8, 2025.
The African Union continues to firmly stand behind African-led initiatives aimed at addressing continental issues, as demonstrated through the Luanda and Nairobi processes.
The talks in Doha were conducted with a mindset aimed at productive dialogue, which supports these initiatives and supplements current regional frameworks. We stress the significance of sustained collaboration among the African Union, various regional economic groups, and global allies to promote enduring stability and harmony.
Youssouf conveyed his gratitude to the State of Qatar and His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Amir, for their endeavors in promoting dialogue and building trust.
The African Union called upon all parties involved to sustain the progress made in Doha and collaborate towards fully implementing the accepted pledges. The AUC is prepared to assist and facilitate these endeavors, consistent with its mission to foster peace, security, and stability throughout the region.
