‘Intrepid Stitch’ Showcases Texture in Mare Island

"The Intrepid Stitch" launches this Saturday at Mare Island Art Studios, featuring quilts and fiber arts by the North Bay collective Fiber Expressions.

Orna Pascal, who calls Mare Island Art Studios her home base as an artist, developed a deep affection for quilt artistry many years back and has remained committed to crafting these artworks ever since.

I've always had a passion for fabrics," explains Pascal. "My mother used to sew, and I picked up sewing as well, though I wasn’t particularly skilled at crafting garments.

In time, she enrolled in severalquilting courses and "quickly dove into the realm of textiles."

"The Bold Thread" is gathering the creations of Pascal along with 16 additional quilt and textile artisans from Fiber Expressions.

The team convenes frequently, supporting one another in their creative endeavors. As Pascal explains, "We exchange ideas, meet up, hold monthly gatherings, and simply enjoy spending time together."

This marks the fourth art exhibition for Fiber Expressions held at Mare Island Art Studios.

The theme, "Journeys through time and space," emerged from a meditation by group member Jennifer Whitmer. "During our retreat, she shared her idea with us early in the morning when she said, 'What do you all think of this?'" explained Pascal.

The team instantly approved of the theme because it had the power to motivate them without limiting their creative freedom. "Being so broad, this theme allows each one of us from such varied backgrounds to express ourselves freely," explains Pascal.

Certain artists produce expansive works that span whole walls, whereas some opt for more detailed and compact creations. The exhibition includes an enormous set of wings alongside a map-covered wall; this wall highlights markers indicating the sources of inspiration for numerous quilts showcased.

Along with the primary gallery exhibition, an additional section featuring five artworks from participating artists will be displayed in a distinct part of the gallery. Despite these pieces not being specifically made for the theme, Pascal believes they enhance and complement the overall display.

On April 5th, the works of 17 different artists will go on exhibit, with an opening reception commencing at 2 p.m., accessible each weekend throughout April.

Pascal aims to motivate beginners who have not explored quilting or fiber arts before to delve into this artistic expression. She states, "Fiber Expressions welcomes everyone interested in art quilts; it’s an inclusive gathering."
