SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A proposed legislation might secure funds for numerous battleground locations throughout the state.
Renamed in honor of Vince Dooley, the previous head football coach at the University of Georgia.
"I was a senior when Coach Dooley led Georgia to their first national championship," stated Welton.
Chris Welton was a component of Dooley’s football heritage.
However, nowadays he is dedicated to sustaining another aspect of his heritage by conserving history throughout the state.
He serves as a trustee on the board of the American Battlefield Trust.
He wasn't merely an outstanding football coach; he was what we'd refer to as a Renaissance individual," stated Welton. "He was deeply interested in history and held a master’s degree in that field.
Now, a bill approved with unanimous consent in the Senate this week seeks to secure matching funds for the American Battlefield Trust to safeguard historic battlegrounds from being developed.
Welton indicates that this will enable visitors to explore those locations as well... which numerous places do not permit at present.
We do more than safeguard and conserve these locations; we also offer something known as interpretation," explained Welton. "This involves documenting the series of events that culminated in that particular battle or occurrence.
Across the state, there are 37 battlefields from the Civil War, Revolutionary War, and War of 1812.
Seven of those locations are in our vicinity.
Welton suggests that this might attract more attention to the Coastal Empire.
"Battlefield tourists, who usually visit battlefields, tend to spend more money, remain longer, and consequently generate additional employment opportunities for the residents of Georgia," stated Welton.
The legislation will now go to Governor Kemp’s desk for his signature.
